Preparing for the Interview
Generally, the interview is the most common selection assessment method used by selection panels and if you are shortlisted you will be invited to meet with the Selection Committee.
All interview questions will be job related - that is, they will relate to the position for which you have applied and in most cases refer directly to the capabilities/selection criteria.
To prepare yourself for the questions which may be asked:
- Re-read the Position Description and advertisement.
- Focus on the capabilities/selection criteria and reflect upon examples of work situations where you applied the relevant skills and abilities.
- Focus on the responsibilities of the position giving thought to how you would carry them out. Think about any problems you might encounter and how you would resolve them.
- If the position has a supervisory role, consider your special responsibilities as a supervisor.
- If you have any relevant reports or other work you have done, which will provide examples of your skills and abilities, you may prepare them for presentation at the interview.
The Interview
Dress as you would usually do for work - neatly and appropriate to your job.
During the interview:
- Do not assume that each panel member knows about your suitability for the job, even though you may have worked with them or have previous experience in the position for which you have applied.
- Take time to answer each question. A well thought-out answer presented clearly and concisely will be appreciated by the Panel, even though you may take a few moments to put your thoughts together. Seek clarification to a question, prior to providing an answer if you do not understand it.
- When the opportunity is presented, ask any questions you may have relevant to the position. Avoid asking questions "just for the sake of it". If you don't have any questions then do not hesitate to say so.
- You are permitted to take a copy of your application or any other relevant information to the interview to refer to if desired.
- You may wish to consider asking the Panel at the beginning of the interview, the allotted interview time and how many questions there are so as you may apportion the appropriate time to each question.
Panel members may record your replies to questions to assist them in accurately recalling your details when they are making their final decision.
Feedback
For those candidates shortlisted and interviewed, you may choose at that time to seek feedback on your application. This may assist you in your preparation of future applications and in your performance at interviews. Feedback can be arranged through the recruitment staff, HR Services.
